Leonardo DiCaprio Goes Green in Style with Hybrid Sportscar

One of Hollywood’s biggest stars is also one of the environment’s loudest defenders, and Leonardo DiCaprio walks the walk. Leo has recently gotten behind the wheel of the $100,000 2012 Fisker Karma. This is one hybrid car that leaves the Toyota Prius in the dust when it comes to style and speed. Okay, it’s still no Ferrari, but that’s not the point.

“A couple of years ago... you saw some movie stars like Leonardo DiCaprio buying a Prius," said car designer Henrik Fisker, speaking to Reuters in 2009. "He could have bought any car in the world, and I remember seeing that on television and thinking to myself, ‘you know, when you've got a guy who could buy any Ferrari or Rolls-Royce and he's buying a Prius, you know something is changing dramatically.’"

The Karma goes from 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds, much quicker than the Prius at 10.1 seconds, but about twice as long as top gas-guzzling sportscars out there. Where the Karma shines compared to other vehicles in its price range is mileage. The Karma averages about 67 miles per gallon, and can go 50 miles on a single battery charge, or 300 total with the gas engine engaged.

For lovers of the earth, this has to be seen as a positive development. As long as people cultivate identities based on the vehicle they drive, they’re going to want luxury items. Now they can have those while leaving less of a mark on the environment.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Soon, we’ll see more and more car makers following suit. The demand for hybrids is growing all the time, and for now the selection is relatively small. But when A-listers like Leo are motoring around Tinseltown in eco-friendly cars, others are bound to follow suit.

After all, say what you want, but DiCaprio is making some dynamite films these days. Both Inception and Shutter Island were homeruns, and early rumors are that the upcoming biopic J. Edgar could be more Oscar-bait for the kid some of us remember as the symptom of “Cousin Oliver Syndrome” on Growing Pains. Speaking of Growing Pains, what’s Kirk Cameron driving these days?
