Cher. Prince. Beyonce. Madonna. Sting. There are artists who manage to break that barrier until they only need a one word name for everyone in the world to know who they are - and we love them!

Hydroponics gardening is rewarding. It’s a hobby that bears real fruit. It’s hard work, though, so it’s nice to kick back and watch music videos at break time - and some of the most watched videos in the world are those performed by Shakira.

Shakira: Early Years

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. She wrote her first poem when she was four, and her first song when she was eight (following the death of her older half brother - her father wore dark glasses to hide his grief and Shakira wrote the song 'Your Dark Glasses' for him.) She sang and also belly danced, and performed for her schoolmates each Friday.

Shakira Breaks Out

Shakira had the good fortune to come to the attention of one Monica Ariza, who introduced her to Sony Columbia exec Ciro Vargas. Vargas obtained an audition for her in Bogota, surprising other executives, who immediately signed the 13 year old singer. Her early albums were pulled and now are considered promos as Shakira took a hiatus to finish high school.

Shakira Comes Back

Shakira came back to the spotlight in the mid nineties and started winning Latin Grammy’s. Her performance of Ojos Asi on MTV’s Unplugged brought her to the attention of the non-Latin world and Shakira began singing songs in English to broaden her fan base. She continued to belly dance on stage, and her costumes became a thing of legend.

…So You Don’t Confuse Them With Mountains

Shakira’s crossover album (Whenever, Wherever) became an instant hit. The title cut was a number one song in most countries, and reached #6 on the Hot 100 list. She referenced her breasts in the song, saying they were small and humble. Shakira proceeded to team with other stars for further hits, including La Tortura (with Alejandro Sanz), Hips Don’t Lie (with Wyclef Jean), and Illegal (with Carlos Santana).

Shakira’s Successes

According to Forbes, Shakira was the fourth highest earning female singer in 2008, falling behind only Madonna, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion.

Her hit Hips Don’t Lie made her the first artist in the history of the Billboard charts to earn the coveted number one spots on both the Top 40 Mainstream and Latin Chart in the same week - and it was the most played pop single in one week in American Radio history, garnering 9,637 plays.

With Waka Waka, Shakira became the third artist to break 1 billion views on YouTube (after the widely publicized and controversial Lady Gaga VS Justin Bieber showdown). In 2010, Shakira was ranked number five on the 'Online Video's Most Viral Artists of 2010' with 404,118,932 views.

Shakira is definitely the most successful Latin/English crossover female artist of the age. Her songs appeal to a wide demographic, and her sexy belly dance moves beat out most choreographed numbers performed by her competition.
