The Coachella Festival Decks the Desert Out in Green

Spring is the season when the land around us becomes green again. But there are some places nature never meant to be green at any time of the year. One of those places is the Coachella Valley, where the hot, dry desert climate (averaging only 4.83 inches of rain annually) means that very little grows on its own. But that hasn’t stopped the area from becoming an oasis of vacation homes and golf courses where perfectly manicured lawns are nurtured by endlessly hissing sprinkler systems.

The area’s irrigation for recreation started back in the 1920s, when Hollywood’s elite began building luxury vacation homes in Palm Springs to escape the watchful eye of the paparazzi. Today, the true emerald jewel of the region is the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which takes place on the pristine 90 acres of Bermuda and rye grass of the Empire Polo Club.

This year, the festival doubled down by hosting not one, but two consecutive weekends of music, both of which sold out in record time thanks to headliners Radiohead, the Black Keys, and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. But many attendees will tell you that even the superstars onstage play second fiddle to the stunning panoramic vista of snowcapped desert mountains one can take in while lying on that perfect carpet of green.
