3G Hook-ups: Dating Apps Designed for Your Smartphone

Whether you’re looking for your soul mate or a one night stand, there’s a phone app to help you find that special someone. Whether you’re looking for your soul mate or a one night stand, there’s a phone app to help you find that special someone.

The smartphone era has spawned a wide variety of apps that focus on sparking romance among iPhone and Android users. These are some of the best on the market today. Sorry Blackberry users, you’re probably not getting any.

This app employs a system called “proxdating,” which uses location-based matchmaking to ensure that the viable candidates you meet are nearby. With Facebook and FourSquare connectivity, you can check out the other person’s profile before taking the plunge. So you might want to clear out all those pictures of the ex before signing-up.

Picksie is an app that aims to match you and your date with the best location for your perfect meet-up. The app compares your interests to those of your date, and then uses your phone’s GPS to direct you and the object of your affection to the ideal restaurant, bar or activity. Picksie even looks at the weather so there will be no rain on your parade.

DATING DNA (Free / $4.99 for Plus)

For a phone app, this one is surprisingly robust. As the name suggests, Dating DNA attempts to match people on a deeper level, similar to traditional matchmaking services like eHarmony. This is great for the iPhone addict who is looking for a relationship that’ll last longer than the charge on your phone battery.

From the same developers who gave us the gay/bisexual hook-up app Grindr, Blendr seems like a great idea for straight men and women who are looking for a good time. Realistically, however, Blendr has received mixed reviews from critics and users who don’t feel that the app has the same place within the straight scene that Grindr has found in the gay community.
